If you are missing teeth and are considering either implants or a bridge, here are a few facts and pros and cons you should know before making your decision.
What is an Implant?
Dental implants are a good remedy for missing teeth. It is a titanium post that acts as the root of the tooth which then supports a crown. Dental implants are inserted and fused into the jawbone to anchor its position. The dental crown is then cemented to the implant.
What is a Bridge?
A dental bridge is exactly what it sounds like: a bridge in the gap between missing teeth. Supported by natural teeth or implants on either side, dental bridges are made up of two or more crowns on each part of the gap.
Implants v. Bridge: Pros and Cons
Deciding between implants and a dental bridge can be difficult. Hopefully these pros and cons for both will help you in your decision:
Pros for Implants:
● Little maintenance. High-quality implants can last a whole lifetime and they require little maintenance.
● Natural look. They look and feel like natural teeth which gives you confidence with every smile.
● Jawbone protection. Gaps in your teeth cause your jawbone to be at risk for deterioration. Implants help stimulate natural bone growth which prevents bone loss within the jaw.
● No strain on teeth. Implants support themselves, not causing any strain to the surrounding teeth, unlike bridges who need the support from surrounding teeth.
Cons for Implants:
● Surgery. Implants are inserted into your jawbone and that requires surgery. Like any surgery, there are risks. Risks for dental implant surgery include infection, nerve damage, damage to surrounding teeth, and jaw fractures.
● Time. Since implants can’t be done in a single visit and surgery is required, the time it takes to heal is lengthened. The whole process can take about 3 months, often more.
● Cost. The price will vary depending on the type of implant and the condition of the teeth, but it is an expensive procedure.
Pros for Bridges:
● Simpler procedure. Unlike implants, dental bridges don’t require surgery, making the process less painful.
● Less time. The procedure for dental implants can be done within a few weeks, whereas implants can take several months.
● Cost effective. Bridges are more affordable than implants, and they are still strong and supportive.
Cons for Bridges:
● Less aesthetically pleasing. Bridges are not as natural-looking as implants which can make them les aesthetically pleasing.
● Replacement. Bridges need to be replaced periodically. Every 5-7 years they should be replaced.
● Natural teeth damage. Since bridges need the support of surrounding teeth, it can cause considerable damage to the tooth structure.
